The winners of the BAFTA Orange British Academy Film Awards are...

Wrapping up all the winners from the 65th annual BAFTA Orange British Academy Film Awards...

Sunday evening marked the biggest night of the British film calendar as the stars descended upon the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden for BAFTA's 65th annual Orange British Academy Film Awards, celebrating excellence in cinematic achievement during 2011.

The night was dominated by Michel Hazanavicius' acclaimed silent feature The Artist, which took home seven awards including Best Picture, Director (Hazanavicius), Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Original Screenplay (Hazanavicius again), and has now surely solidified its position as favourite for the Academy Awards later this month.

Although it lost out on Best Film, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was named Outstanding British Film and also picked up Adapted Screenplay, while Meryl Streep received the Leading Actress award for her role as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Meanwhile home-grown winners included Paddy Considine, who received Oustanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for his feature directorial debut, Tyrannosaur, and Adam Deacon - this year's recipient of the Orange Rising Star Award.

Michel Hazanavicius' acclaimed Oscar front-runner The Artist leads the nominations going in to the ceremony and will contest twelve awards, including Best Film, Best Director (Hazanavicius), Leading Actor (Jean Dujardin), Leading Actress (Bérénice Bejo) and Original Screenplay. However, The Artist will face stiff competition, particularly from the British espionage drama Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which has an impressive eleven nominations itself and is also looking for success in the Best Film, Best Director (Tomas Alfredson) and Leading Actor (Gary Oldman) categories.

Along with The Artist and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, the nominees for Best Film are The Descendants, Drive and Help, while Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) and Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin) join Hazanavicius and Alfredson in contesting the Best Director award against Martin Scorsese (Hugo), with the legendary American filmmaker also this year's recipient of the BAFTA Fellowship.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and We Need to Talk About Kevin are also nominated for Outstanding British Film alongside My Week with Marilyn, Senna and Shame, while John Hurt will receive an honorary BAFTA for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema in recongition of a career that includes roles in a diverse range of films that includes the likes of Midnight Express, Alien, The Elephant Man and the Harry Potter series.

Gary Oldman has got to be a dead cert? Hasn't he...?

I think he has to be the favourite, home advantage and so on, but I'm thinking Jean Dujardin may sneak it.

Yeah it wouldn't surprise me if Dujardin pulled off a shock. It will be an interesting night that might help us gauge just how far The Artist juggernaut will go
