Natalie Portman's next film to be with Terrence Malick

Thursday, 9 February 2012

It appears as though the old saying is true: You wait years for a new Terrence Malick film, then four come along, in various stages of production, at once. And /Film are reporting that Natalie Portman will make her return to acting in two of them.

Malick has made only two films since his 20 year gap between Days of Heaven (1979) and The Thin Red Line (1998). Now, the IMDb is flouting four more for releases over the next two years: Voyage of Time (2012); Untitled Terrence Malick Project (2012 - sounds promising, eh?); Lawless (2013); and Knight of Cups (2013). Portman is said to have signed on for the latter two, marking a return from her own brief hiatus. Her last film was Thor (2011), which seems like an age ago.

The assorted casts for both films contains Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett. Actors of a very high caliber are evidently drawn towards Malick, who is arguably the greatest living American director.

It's just a shame that he takes so bloody long in post-production for his films. So those approximated release dates scattered amongst 2012 and 13? Yeah, don't hold your breath.
