Despite being the first superhero movie out of the gate this year, Nicolas Cage's second outing as the Devil's bounty hunter failed to set the box office alight, with Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance opening with just £1,340,000 for a third-placed debut behind last week's top two films, The Woman in Black and The Muppets. The Daniel Radcliffe ghost story retained its position at the top of the chart, increasing its opening haul by almost £350k with £3.5m receipts in its second weekend, while The Muppets also enjoyed an increase week-over-week, boosting its take by £750k to claim second with £3.4m (and, buoyed by strong mid-week takings, a higher cumulative gross than Hammer's latest effort). Moving on down the chart and the 3D re-release of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace banked another £1m but slipped one spot to fourth, while the Dwayne Johnson family adventure sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island climbed one place to sneak back into the top five in its third week of release. Elsewhere The Vow, Chronicle and War Horse all dropped two places each to occupy sixth, seventh and tenth respectively, with The Descendants down one in eighth and Oscar hopeful The Artist breaking back into the chart, the acclaimed silent feature climbing up to ninth place, having amassed a healthy £6.8m after eight weeks on screens.
