MOVIES
1. Ghostbusters - Quite simply, this is the perfect movie. Funny, heart-warming, exciting and thoroughly entertaining. Dan Aykroyd is my hero.
2. Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope - While Empire is technically a better movie, I'm taking A New Hope because it is a complete movie. It has a beginning, a middle and an end which ties up all the loose threads. The problem with Empire is that as soon as it ends you'll want to watch Jedi...
3. Jurassic Park - This was a tough one as I only wanted to take one Spielberg movie and he has far too many good films under his belt, but Jurassic Park is just a masterpiece of cinema. Awe-inspiring visuals, great characters and action set-pieces that have you on the edge of your seat. I'm taking Jurassic Park over E.T. because there is nothing worse than watching a 26 year old man cry while a puppet turns grey.
4. Back to the Future Part II - It's odd to say, but for all it's flaws, I prefer BTTF Part II over the other entries of the series. Maybe I'm a sucker for time travel, alternate realities and 80s visions of what "the future" will look like.
5. Airheads - This movie never fails to make me laugh. Great film, great soundtrack and a great premise. Plus, I can always relate to Chaz's line of, "Do you know what it's like to be on the bill and to play for 15 minutes and the only people there to see you are the other bands and their girlfriends? Don't talk to me about Rock 'n' Roll! I'm out there in the clubs and on the streets and I'm living it! I am Rock 'n' Roll!" Appeals to the struggling musician in me.
6. The Transformers: The Movie - If there was something worse than a watching a 26 year old man crying while a puppet turns grey, it would be watching a 26 year old man crying over a cartoon robot turning black.
7. Clerks II - Kevin Smith has been a huge influence on my life with regards to writing and this for me was the height of his brilliance. The scene with Dante and Randall in prison is just fantastic. Plus, you just can't hate that dance scene.
8. The Muppets Christmas Carol - I needed a Christmas movie and I needed a Muppet movie - so this was the perfect choice really! Great songs, great use of Muppet characters and just a wonderful movie experience.
9. RoboCop - Clarence Boddicker is my all time favourite movie villain and this movie simply rules. Forget the Terminator, this is my 80s robot of choice (apart from Optimus Prime obviously).
10. The Fly - "I'm an insect who dreamt he was a man and loved it. But now the dream is over... and the insect is awake." An excellent horror movie that shocks, surprises and terrifies. One of the best horror movies of the 80s and for my money one of the all time greats. I could watch this movie every day and Brundlefly's silent beg for mercy at the end will tug at my heart strings every time.
TELEVISION
1. The Twilight Zone - The best TV show ever made. Fact. Rod Serling was a genius with a vision like no other. Fact.
2. Law & Order UK - I prefer this to the US original for reasons I can't quite explain. I haven't really watched TV in about 5 years, but this is the one of two things I'll turn on the idiot box for.
3. Freaks & Geeks - Great cast, great scripts and great storylines. Such a shame it only ran for one season.
4. Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends - Louis is a bit of a hero to me and this series is just an absolute classic. Favourite episodes have to be Wrestling, Swingers, Porn and Gangster Rap. In an ideal world, I'd take all of his documentaries.
5. Dexter - I've just finished season 5 of this impressive series and it has gripped me throughout. While season 3 was a bit of a dud, the over all atmosphere and effect this series creates is just fantastic. Plus I have grown a bit of a crush on Debra Morgan - despite her big nose. Plus, Season 5 has Peter Weller who appeared to be channelling Clarence Boddicker.
6. The Simpsons - Oh come on, who wouldn't take this?
7. Red Dwarf - Classic British comedy that never tires. While Only Fools would be more obvious (and better) choice, this is the sitcom that defined my youth. Lister is a hero, Rimmer is a gimp, Cat is cool and Kryten brings the funny. Kochanski can bugger off though.
8. Modern Family - My girlfriend introduced me to this show recently and I've been hooked ever since. This show is so good that it has restored some faith into me about the state of modern TV. Cam and Mitchell are the best on screen gay couple in the history of TV.
9. The Apprentice - Along with Law & Order UK, this is what makes me watch TV live each and every week (or on iPlayer an hour after it's aired). I don't even know what it is about this show that I love so much because I hate almost everyone on it. Apart from Nick. No one can hate him.
10. The West Wing - I'll be honest, I don't get what they're talking about the half the time and it sometimes makes me feel a bit stupid because I can't follow it. But watching people talk at high speed about intelligent subjects while walking down corridors is captivating TV.
