The Avengers assemble at the top of the UK box office

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 27th to Sunday 29th April 2012…

As expected, Joss Whedon’s epic superhero ensemble Avengers Assemble enjoyed a blockbuster opening at the UK box office, pulling in a mighty £15,778,074 over the Thursday – Sunday period – a figure that beats the entire UK runs of previous Marvel Studios efforts The Incredible Hulk (£8.29m), Thor (£14.05m) and Captain America: The First Avenger (£9.5m). The four-day haul was the the biggest superhero movie opening to date here in the UK and the largest debut since Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 pulled in £23.8m last July, as well as providing Disney with its best three-day and single day totals on these shores. In addition to topping the UK chart, The Avengers placed first in 38 other markets and has already amassed $218.2m globally, with a North American release still to come this Friday.

The arrival of The Avengers spelled bad news for rival blockbuster and last week’s number one film Battleship, which sunk down to sixth, adding another £501k to give the seafaring alien invasion flick £7.13m after three weekends on screens. Still, it had little effect on Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, with the Ewan McGregor-headlined romantic comedy holding firm in second and just dropping 7% in takings with £1.09m, Aardman Animations’ The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists climbed two to fourth, with Mirror Mirror: The Untold Adventures of Snow White also climbing up the chart to finish in seventh. Both The Hunger Games and 21 Jump Street were non-movers (although at opposite ends of the chart in third and ninth), while The Cabin in the Woods slipped one spot to fifth and Titanic 3D and Lockout fell three apiece to eighth and tenth respectively.

Number one this time last year: Thor

Two new films arrive this coming Wednesday, but it’ll be a huge surprise if the Zac Efron romance The Lucky One (cert. 12A) or comedy sequel American Reunion (cert. 15) have anywhere near the pulling power to dethrone Earth’s Mightiest Heroes from the top of the UK box office chart, even with the aid of two days of preview screenings. Meanwhile Friday brings another three new releases – the 3D reissue of the animated Disney classic Beauty and the Beast (cert. U), American horror remake Silent House (cert. 15) and Jason Statham’s latest action thriller Safe (cert. 15).
