UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 5th to Sunday 7th May 2012...

Despite five new entries cracking the top ten, Marvel's The Avengers retains its grip on the UK box office chart, adding another £8.1m to give the superhero team-up a hefty £29.8m, making it the biggest release of the year after just two weekends on screens. Nevertheless, American Pie: Reunion did manage to put up a strong challenge, the comedy sequel pulling in an impressive £6,334,539 (including two days of previews) to take second place.

Two days of previews were less helpful for The Lucky One, with the Zac Efron romance banking £1,159,435 to take third place ahead of the latest Disney 3D re-release, Beauty and the Beast, which earned £685,024 in fourth. Hot on its heels was the Jason Statham actioner Safe in fifth with £679,716, while fellow newcomer Silent House had to settle for seventh with just £214,731.

As a result of the five new releases, The Cabin in the Woods, Battleship, Titanic 3D, 21 Jump Street and Lockout all found themselves knocked from the top ten. In terms of the holdover films, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, The Hunger Games and The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists each dropped four places to occupy positions six through eight, while Mirror Mirror: The Untold Adventures of Snow White slipped three to round out the chart in tenth.
