Academy Award-winning filmmaker Brad Bird has been tapped by Disney to direct the ultra-secretive sci-fi project 1952, which has been scripted by Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof and Entertainment Weekly writer-turned-graphic novelist Jeff Jensen.Having directed acclaimed animated efforts The Iron Giant and Pixar's The Incredibles and Ratatouille, former Simpsons executive consultant Bird made his live-action debut last year with the Tom Cruise-headlined spy sequel Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, which went on to earn close to $700m in global box office receipts.
Although the storyline for 1952 is a closely guarded secret, Disney are eyeing the project as a major tentpole release and plan to shoot the film next year, with Lindelof - whose upcoming credits include Ridley Scott's sci-fi epic Prometheus and J.J. Abrams' Untitled Star Trek Sequel - also serving as producer.
