San Diego Comic-Con 2012 – Thursday Highlights

Rounding up Thursday’s big talking points from the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con International including Disney’s Frankenweenie, Oz: The Great and Powerful, Wreck-It Ralph and The Lone Ranger, The Hobbit, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, The Expendables 2, Skyfall, Star Trek 2 and Dredd…

After a Preview Night on Wednesday, the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con International got underway proper yesterday so here’s a handy guide to some of the best coverage from around the web…

…One of the big highlights on Thursday was the Walt Disney Pictures panel, which was complimented by a new poster and trailer for Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, along with the first trailer for Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful and a Q&A with the voice cast for the upcoming animation Wreck-It Ralph. But, the big surprise was saved until last, as those lucky enough in attendance got to see a tease of Gore Verbinski’s big-budget Western The Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. You can check out a rundown of the entire panel over at ComingSoon, while EW also posted a short description of The Lone Ranger footage…

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey won’t make an appearance until Saturday, but that hasn’t stopped rumours circulating like wildfire that Peter Jackson and company are set to break up the second instalment, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, into two movies – in other words, turning The Hobbit into a trilogy. Not so according to Variety, who state that Jackson has been left with more footage than intended, but there are “no planned or surprise announcements” and “the plan was always for two…”

…Twi-Hards descended on Hall H for the final time as stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Mackenzie Foy joined author Stephanie Meyer on stage for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 panel. Head over to Collider for a summary of the footage that was shown (the first seven minutes of the film), as well as a breakdown of the special sneak peek at The Host that closed the panel…

Collider also has a great summary of The Expendables 2 panel, which was attended by Sylvester Stallone, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Dolph Lundgren and Arnold Schwarzenegger; although they refused to confirm or deny the possibility of The Expendables 3, Arnie did talk up that proposed Twins sequel – which, yawn, may be called Triplets – as well as telling fans to expect an announcement on The Governator cartoon in the very near future…

…A new trailer for Skyfall was screened as part of a special ‘IMAX Remix’ event, which included shots of Daniel Craig’s 007 interacting with Ben Wishaw’s Q, as well as classic Bond iconography such as the Aston Martin and Walther PPK. Head over to Coming Soon for a short breakdown of the trailer…

…And finally, as well as downplaying – and, in effect, confirming – his earlier comments about Gary Mitchell being the villain in the as yet Untitled Star Trek Sequel, Karl Urban has told fans to expect some footage from the J.J. Abrams-directed sequel during Comic-Con. Urban is of course also busy promoting the comic book adaptation Dredd, which has been picking up some impressive reviews following its first screening on Wednesday, and a brand new red band clip has been released. Take a look…
