First footage of a Jaeger from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim?

Thursday, 22 November 2012

There's been a huge amount of secrecy over filmmaker Guillermo del Toro's (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) upcoming kaiju homage Pacific Rim, and while we know from the official synopsis that the film will see its human cast piloting massive robots known as Jaegers against a relentless force of giant monsters, that's pretty much it so far.

Well, thanks to a new promotional video for del Toro's VFX production company Mirada, we may have had our first look some (presumably unfinished or pre-viz) footage from the hotly-anticipated summer 2013 release. The promo offers up a brief glimpse of what could be one of the aforementioned Jaegers, with a giant robot popping up around the 1.15 mark to fire off a missile from a launcher on its arm.

Kind of reminds me of G1 Shockwave. Only grey. At the very least, it's a much better design than Michael Bay gave us in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Check it out here...

UPDATE: Well, it looks like the giant robot has nothing to do with Pacific Rim's giant robots, with Guillermo del Toro confirming that the clip is entirely unrelated to the upcoming film. So, I guess we've still got a few weeks to wait before we finally get to see some footage with the release of the first trailer...

Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Idris Elba (Prometheus), Rinko Kikuchi (The Brothers Bloom), Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses) and Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and is set to hit cinemas on July 12th, 2013.
