First poster for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

To warm things up before the arrival of the trailer for the second instalment of Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth prequel Trilogy this coming Tuesday, Warner Bros. has unveiled a theatrical poster for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug which sees Martin Freeman’s Bilbo Baggins looking out over the ruins of Dale towards the entrance to The Lonely Mountain, where he’ll encounter a rather fearsome dragon…

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is due to hit cinemas on December 13th, with Middle-earth veterans Freeman, Ian McKellen (Gandalf the Grey), Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield), Andy Serkis (Gollum), Christopher Lee (Saruman the White), Sylvester McCoy (Radagast the Brown), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Necromancer / Smaug), Lee Pace (King Tranduil) and Orlando Bloom (Legolas) joined by the likes of Luke Evans (Fast & Furious 6) as Bard the Bowman, Evangeline Lilly (Lost) as Tauriel, Stephen Fry (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) as the Master of Laketown and Mikael Persbrandt (In a Better World) as Beorn.
