Michael Bay developing Ghost Recon movie, The Expendables 2 producer joins Splinter Cell

June 11, 2013 by admin

We’ve been inundated with video game news today as Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo kicked off this year’s E3 by unveiling their latest wares – including the long-awaited Xbox One and PlayStation 4 – but tucked away among all the next-gen excitement is some news about two upcoming Ubisoft / Tom Clancy movie adaptations in Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell.

First up comes a report from Variety which suggests that Michael Bay has signed on to develop Ghost Recon for Warner Bros. through his Platinum Dunes production company, with the Transformers 4 helmer apparently open to directing the adaptation of the best-selling third person shooter series which has shifted over 24 million units since debuting back in 2001.

“These guys don’t belong to any specific organization,” said Jean Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, regarding the unit of U.S. Special Forces at the centre of Ghost Recon. “They’re in the field where the U.S. troops are not supposed to be. It’s a small team with very strong personalities and very specific skill sets. They’re using weapons nobody knows about but it’s very grounded. It’s not sci-fi.”

Meanwhile Deadline has revealed that New Regency – who is also partnering with Ubisoft and Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class) for Assassin’s Creed – has turned to producer Basil Iwanyk to tackle Splinter Cell, which has Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) attached to the lead role of Sam Fisher. Iwanyk’s previous producing credits include Clash of the Titans, The Town, The Expendables, Wrath of the Titans and The Expandables 2. Oh, and Lost Boys: The Thirst.
