Joss Whedon on the possibility of killing off characters in The Avengers: Age of Ultron

Last year, Joss Whedon left many a fanboy fighting back tears with the “death” of everyone’s favourite S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson in The Avengers (although of course the fan favourite is set to return next month for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). Whedon is currently hard at work putting the finishing touches to the script for the sequel, and from what little we know about The Avengers: Age of Ultron, it seems there’s an awful lot to fit in the movie (see the inclusion of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, expanded roles for Black Widow and Hawkeye, and the whole Ultron storyline), so what’s the chances of Whedon thinning out the roster of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes by killing off an Avenger or two?

“I’m always joking about that. Um… maybe,” Whedon tells Entertainment Weekly (via ComicBook). “But I’d have to have a really good reason, a really great sequence for [Marvel execs] to go, ‘We’ll cut off a potential franchise, that’s fine!’ They know as any good studio does, that without some stakes, some real danger, how involved can we get? We don’t just rule it out across the board, but neither is the mission statement ‘Who can we kill?’ We try to build the story organically and go, ‘How hard can we make it on these people?’ You go to the movies to see people you love suffer-that’s why you go to the movies.”

The Avengers: Age of Ultron is set for release on May 1st 2015, with Robert Downey Jr. expected to reunite with Avengers stars Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson. Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass 2) has been strongly tipped to join the cast as Quicksilver while his Godzilla co-star Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) looks to have secured the role of Scarlet Witch.

I can see some capturing and torturing but Marvel won’t go and kill their superheroes

    • Amir

      I can see Cap dying.

    • Mikey

Why not? Characters die in the comics and get brought back later, so why not in film?

Comics and movies are two different beasts. Kids will be devastated and stores would lose money on action figures lol. But I can see Cap dying. With all the talk about captain America being the bridging of phase 2 and avengers 2, maybe they do kill him only to bring him back? I mean captain America is supposed to be a “political thriller” so maybe he dies (only to come back of course). Or maybe Thor and he comes back like the episodes of season 1 of Avengers EMH only to come back by making a deal of some kind like in the Hulk vs Thor movie with Banner? If someone died they’d come back but after the Coulson thing, it kind of takes the whole air out of dying, that’s why I can’t see it happening again. Even if it was for good it was already done or teased with Coulson. I don’t see it happening

“…….without some stakes, some real danger, how involved can we get?…”

    - its kinda ironic (no offense meant Mr. Whedon), ……….The Avengers didn’t reallyyy have any SERIOUS stakes, NOR did it possess much “danger”. -_- + :(
Sure – the Avengers WAS a fun(ny) adrenaline fueled BlAsT! – But I HOPE that there will be more – personality and/or genuine heartfelt feeling pumped into this sequel……

Tony is so gonna die. Another will inherit the franchise of Iron Man. Please for the love of everything dont like it be Paltrow though.

I’ll bet if anyone dies, it won’t be one of the Big 4. It’ll probably be either Hawkeye or Black Widow.

Seen as Downey Jr wants out of the Iron Man role…. Why not kill him? Then have someone else (as in, not Tony Stark) as Iron Man.. Could work as an easy out for Robert and a way of carrying on a successful franchise for Marvel.

Downey has been signed on for TWO avengers sequels. Unlikely he will die in this one.

Bucky will kill Steve rogers at the end of cap 2 and then after ‘waking up’ become captain america, then widows expanded role could be to do with dealing with caps death and reluctance to work with Bucky, cue ultron bringing them all together, just my two cents

what if tony stark dies in avengers 2 and becomes vision in avengers 3

  • Tyrant Lizard King

Kill Widow and Hawkeye if you ask me. They were a waste of screen time in Avengers and no doubt will be here too.

Black Widow is amazing, for one. If she were to die, I would be devastated. And secondly, Joss has already said that he will be expanding their screen time in the second film.
