Just weeks after the online release of Mortal Kombat: Legacy II – the second season of the popular live-action web series – director Kevin Tancharoen (Fame, Glee: The 3D Concert Movie) has revealed via Twitter that he’s “decided to move on to other creative opportunities” and will no longer helm Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema’s big screen reboot of the classic video game beat-em-up franchise.
Tancharoen originally secured the directing gig on Mortal Kombat back in 2011, having impressed with his 2010 proof of concept short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, which then led to then ten-episode web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy. The script for the new Mortal Kombat has been written by Oren Uziel (Rebirth), who also happens to have 22 Jump Street and Men in Black 4 on his upcoming slate, but with the project now without a director it’s unclear as to the status of the planned reboot.
