Oliver Davis reviews The Expendables 3… based entirely on the film’s 50 second teaser trailer.
In a radical departure from the action movie franchise’s usual tone, The Expendables’ third installment ventures into comedy drama genre when everyone’s favourite gang of aging bodybuilders are faced with the closure of their beloved aircraft hangar, where they meet to watch television, drink Bud Limes and plot ‘one last mission(s).’
Even the revenge business isn’t safe from the recession. After our heroes miss yet another rent payment on their Canadair CL-215 amphibious flying boat, and the law suits from dispatched henchmen’s families begin to stack up, Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and Co. have two choices: raise $2 million by the end of the month, or face losing the only place where they can safely hang out and store a number of dangerous firearms.
There’s only one way they can raise that money in such little time…by getting the old band back together to form The Sexpendables, a male striptease act Ross and Lee Christmas (Jason Statham) started when they were struggling mercenaries back in the 80s.
Critics are already hailing the sequel as a triumph, praising the film’s increased focus on story – calling the impotent Arnie sub-plot “brave” and applauding the filmmakers’ efforts to scale back the homoerotic tension that characterised the first two movies.
Check out the trailer below, which references The Expendables 3’s climactic scene. The Sexpendables are shown rehearsing their big finish ‘walk away from camera, slow turn’ move, where the whole gang will rip off their Velcro-attached fetish military gear, revealing the muscular, naked bodies beneath…
The Expendables 3 stars Sylvester Stallone (Grudge Match), Jason Statham (Crank), Mel Gibson (Machete Kills), Harrison Ford (Anchorman 2), Antonio Banderas (Shrek), Wesley Snipes (Blade), and Arnold Schwarzenegger (Escape Plan).
The Patrick Hughes-directed movie is set for release on August 15th, 2014.
