J.J. Abrams on the secrecy surrounding Star Wars: Episode VII

Despite the fact that Disney’s Star Wars: Episode VII is gearing up to go into production this Spring, we’ve had very little in the way of news from the eagerly-anticpated sequel, save for Carrie Fisher’s comments that she’s set to return alongside Original Trilogy stars Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford.

Of course, as we saw with the whole Benedict Cumberbatch / John Harrison mystery on Star Trek Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams likes to keep his cards close to his chest, and during a chat with The Daily Telegraph the director has spoken about the secrecy surrounding Episode VII.

“[Star Wars] has always been a more open, fan-engaged universe than I’ve been used to, there’ll be some sort of compromise… there’s a purity in not knowing every little thing [about a story ahead of time]. We’re living in a moment of instant information and a sense of entitlement to that information. I think it’s nice to remember that there’s nothing wrong with a sense of anticipation.”

While a sense of anticipation is all well and good, perhaps Abrams should spare a thought for the fans forced to suffer through wild rumour after wild rumour, and finally give us some casting news? If only to put us out of our misery.
