According to Deadline, Fox is gearing up to develop a remake of the classic musical West Side Story, specifically because Steven Spielberg has expressed an interest in the project, although it’s said to be in the very early stages, with a writer yet to become attached.
The original movie adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical was released in 1961 and won ten Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director (Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins), giving it the distinction of being the most-recognised musical by the Academy.
Spielberg is currently without a directorial project on his upcoming slate, with the Daniel H. Wilson sci-fi novel adaptation Robopocalypse on indefinite hiatus. Would you like to see him tackling West Side Story as his next film? Let us know your thoughts…
