Ever heard of the tale of Nicolas Cage (The Rock) playing Superman? While some of us have seen the photos of Cage in his suit, and heard Kevin Smith’s hilarious take on the film during his An Evening With Kevin Smith DVD, many are still unaware that there was almost another Superman movie before Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns.
But now, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, documentary filmmaker Jon Schnepp has investigated the true story behind the aborted film in The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?, which has had its first trailer debut online.
Superman Lives was set for release back in 1998/1999, and was going to be directed by Tim Burton (Batman), with Cage in the title role and Chris Rock (Lethal Weapon 4) as Jimmy Olsen. While some artwork and designs, and indeed a teaser poster have appeared online over the years, it seems as though everyone involved with the film, including Burton, Smith, Wesley Strick, producer Lorenzo DiBonaventura and a whole host of the crew from the film, have been interviewed here and it may at last tell us the true story of the aborted film.

The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened is set for its first screening on August 1st in the US.
