Guillermo del Toro admits that Hellboy 3 isn’t going to happen

Ron Perlman as HellboyAfter years of back and forth chatter, which ultimately did nothing but get our hopes up, director Guillermo del Toro has admitted that Hellboy 3 just isn’t going to happen. The desire is there, he’s got a great idea, and Ron Perlman is dying to come back. But frankly none of that justifies the $150 million price tag that film would require.

During his recent Reddit AMA, del Toro was asked about the status of Hellboy 3, and said:

“Well, you know, we don’t have that movie on the horizon, but the idea for it was to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny, his inevitable destiny, is to become the beast of the Apocalypse, and having him and Liz face the sort of, that part of his nature, and he has to do it, in order to be able to ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the 3rd film. He has to become the best of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being. It’s a very interesting ending to the series, but I don’t think it will happen.”

Damn. The first two Hellboy movies are excellent, and perfectly suited for del Toro’s dark, original, and a little bit twisted sensibilities. What’s even worse is that it sounds like he had an exceptionally exciting ending to the series that would have done justice to the things he set up in Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Alas, we’ll just have to pine after what could have been, and pray that someday, someday, del Toro will launch the biggest Kickstarter the world has ever seen.

Del Toro may not be making Hellboy 3 a reality, but he does have a pretty packed resume. He just finished filming his horror film Crimson Peak, and just got the greenlight for Pacific Rim 2 (which will be accompanied by an animated series). He’s also an executive producer on the new FX series The Strain, and is eyeing an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness. Oh, and he recently announced that he’ll work on a small black and white film as well. Because he clearly doesn’t have enough on his plate.

Tell us, are you disappointed that we’ll never get Hellboy 3? Or are you still holding out hope that the stars will align someday in the future? Sound off in the comment section below.

Sounds like it could have been awesome. Shame it won’t happen.

  • Derreckandthedominos

Why can’t someone else do it?

    • roons

He would love to do it, but funding is a problem; He’s been to several studios, but none of them would really like to actually produce the movie. A kickstarter could be done, but you’d need tens of millions of dollars. I mean, HB2 had a budget of ~$85 million.

How about an animated Hellboy 3 ?

    • Marcus2012

      Ew

    • Richard

      There are two with Ron

  • Eric Reiter

How about producing a BPRD tv series?

    • James Garcia

YES! I actually wrote an article suggesting that about a year ago. I would absolutely love to see that happen. It would be a great extension of the franchise, and wouldn’t even have to feature Hellboy. He could show up in a cameo role every now and then (I’m sure Perlman, who’s done TV work before, would be down for that), while the rest of the series focuses on the BPRD.

I’m just spitballing here but could a kickstarter campaign get this movie produced?

    • Melwing

If a Kickstarter could produce $100 million +++ for a movie then I’m truly worried about the world’s priorities.

    • James Garcia

Doubtful. Hellboy 3 is no Veronica Mars… That film had the studio saying, “Hey, we’ll make your movie if you can get $____ funded.” In this case Legendary doesn’t feel confident at all to greenlight Hellboy 3. Yes, the first two were successful, but fell short of making a ton at the box office. So, a third one is a risk they unfortunately aren’t willing to take. Plus, even if del Toro DID make a Kickstarter, $150 million is a LOT to ask for.

      • ricebowl

$150 million is a lot, sure; but if he can generate a portion of that price via Kickstarter (or any other equivalent crowd sourcing system), and demonstrate that a market exists (and backers will presumably form the absolute minimum cinema audience, since few would fund and decide not to see the movie), then he may find himself in a stronger bargaining position with a request for reduced funding.

      • Richard

There is a way but you may not like my idea.
Kickstarter for 2 million and have a video ‘VOD’

  • Richard

All well. It’s sad that he won’t.

  • Logan

    my heart just broke

  • Jon Phil

this is what disgusts me about Universal. They were willing to make that Awful R.I.P.D movie that flopped. They were willing to do that Awful THE THING Prequel that totally flopped.
Now they made that Dracula Untold movie that looks awful as well. BUT NO HELLBOY 3????
what the hell seriously!!!!! What the HELL?

  • seipherryu

Why not try to get it crowd sourced?

    • Marcus2012

Because the largest Kickstarter project only made $15 million, which is nothing compared to the $100 million it would cost…

  • sbetow

Bummer. But can’t wait for At The Mountains of Madness!

  • Capital_7

I’d like to see it rebooted anyway. The tone of those films- and I love those movies- is just not Hellboy in any way.

  • Jonathan Maynor

    Someone start a kickstarter, NOW!

  • KiritoKun

If Potato Salad can make nearly 50k, Hellboy 3 can accomplish 100 mil

  • Ry

Fuck it, make the kickstarter. At least give it a shot.

  • Simon Chalder

Star Citizen is up to $49.000,000 and that started as a kickstarted https://robertsspaceindustries.com/funding-goals

  • Patty
