Jared Hess is back at it again with his latest film Don Verdean. This is the comedic writer/director (and sometimes actor’s) first film in six years. Check out the new clip here…
In the above clip, Danny McBride, who plays Tony Lazarus attempts to proposition biblical archaeologist Don Verdean (Sam Rockwell) to come work for his church the Lazarus fellowship. After offering to bankroll his endeavors, Leslie Bibb who plays Joylinda Lazarus, helps drive the nail in the coffin, so to speak. After very little actual convincing, Verdean willingly obliges. “I think it’s fair to say this might be a match made in heaven,” says Verdean with an obviously bad religious pun.
Don Verdean follows the title character (Sam Rockwell), a Biblical archaeologist hired by the local church pastor to find faith-promoting relics in the Holy Land. After proving unsuccessful in his attempts to find anything of substance, he gets involved in a coverup that ultimately leads to a “comic conspiracy.” The faith-based comedy co-stars Amy Ryan, Jemaine Clement, Will Forte and Steve Park.
Jared Hess is the genius behind the 2004 cult comedy Napoleon Dynamite, starring Jon Heder, Efren Ramirez and Jon Gries. He has since released two other features Nacho Libre (Jack Black) and Gentlemen Broncos (Michael Angarano, Jemaine Clement & Mike White), both of which were generally funny but didn’t quite catch on like that of his debut feature. Most recently Hess adapted Napoleon Dynamite as an animated series, starring much of the original cast.
Don Verdean was written by Hess, along with his wife Jerusha Hess. According to Deadline, the film was just picked up by Lionsgate last week and is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival later this week.
