Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash was one of the most acclaimed films of last year, winning three Oscars (Best Supporting Actor, Best Film Editing and Best Sound Mixing), as well as further nominations for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
As it happens, its inclusion in the Adapted Screenplay category at the Oscars was due to Chazelle producing a portion of his original screenplay into a short film in order to drum up interest and investment for the full feature. The subsequent 18-minute short premiered at Sundance in 2013, with J.K. Simmons in the role of the teacher, and Johnny Simmons (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) as the drummer.
