Manny Camacho breaks down the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer…
San Diego Comic-Con is upon us and with last nights amazing 3 minute 2nd trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, we just can’t seem to get enough. Everything from character reveals, to moments that were awe-inspiring are seen in the new trailer.
Here we’ve collected numerous HD screen grabs of the trailer and broke down what we’re witnessing. Some of these come as no surprise, others leave many questions. Some may be foreshadowing the amazing direction this new film is boldly attempting as the next installment in the DC Cinematic Universe.
First is Batman. He and his counterpart are exceptionally prominent throughout the trailer but there seems to be a focus on Batman and various stages of his involvement in the story. We see a scene that appears to be a flashback to when Superman was originally fighting off Zod. One where the destruction of the city is taking place. Bruce rushes in as everyone else attempts to escape the collapsing building. Trying to save a little girl.
We get what appears to be visual confirmation that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is playing Thomas Wayne, during yet another flashback scene to the Dark Knight’s origins. A scene I did not at all expect we’d be seeing again in this incarnation of the Bat. Never-the-less.
This aspect of the trailer still seems a bit of a mystery as there are other moments when you see taunting images that appear to be the work of the Joker. This one (above) doesn’t have the signature comedic flair the clown prince of crime usually employes, while the screen grab below is definitely something you’d expect.
“HAHAHA Jokes on you BATMAN”
We see many of the same images we’ve already encountered for the Batmobile and a great new shot of the Batwing.
We get a glimpse of superheroics from both Batman and Superman, but on one note it would appear Batman is far more brutal in this incarnation than usual. We see a captured person showcasing a Batman brand on his chest.
The trailer showcases something not quite as expected. It would appear Superman is using the aide of soldiers, mercenaries, or some other kind of assistance from a group of armed men brandishing his symbol on their uniforms.
We see them (seemingly) overpowering Batman in the image below in what only be described as either some desert location or an area that may have been devastated by conflict and or war. But it is still yet unclear their purpose. They do have an interesting German-esque shock troop look. I wonder if that is intentional as you can see helmets of this kind throughout the world in police and SWAT units. Eitherway, the immediate thought of Nazi-style shock troops came to mind. And any image that reminds us of such a group of people is usually intentional to deliver a very specific emotional attachment.
In another scene that would appear parallel to Batman getting overpowered or momentarily at a loss; we equally see Superman kneeling, or brought to his knees, by Luthor. A scene that is most concerning and curious.
We also finally see what appears to be Kryptonite, since it was sorely missing from the previous Man of Steel film.
One grab I took caught my eye as I watched the trailer. We get a lovely closeup of Superman’s Chest Emblem and can clearly see some Kyrptonian lettering across the center.
Then I caught this little nugget of homage and respect. It’s quite subtle and likely can be argued that it is coincidental. But knowing how much Snyder loves and considers Frank Miller a Genius, I’m sure it’s way to pay homage within Easter eggs to the source material.
Just before Batman is seemingly about to be fried by what creative editing seems to be trying to tell us is Superman’s Heat Vision, you get a lightning strike on his position in the trailer; just as he evades the blast. Which looks like a beautifully timed moment to capture the appearance of the Graphic Novel and Animated Feature art from Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
Just before a very narrow escape!
We get what appears to be a crazy clash of epic proportion with Wonder Woman involved. Seemingly creating a calamitous explosion, or blocking a blast aimed at her. If we’re seeing a blast she is deflecting prior to some editing magic adding in the explosion from a completely different scene. The blast likely could be coming from Aquaman himself, more so–from his trident. But we didn’t see him at all in this trailer. There is only one random moment under water.
We do get to see Diana under normal circumstances and likely in a function for high society where she will be crossing paths with Bruce Wayne. Whether or not they will know each other and what their secret identities are early on is still unknown. But hopefully by now, any issues any hardcore fan against Gal Gadot playing the iconic superhero should be well put to bed.
Then of course we get can glean two very important scenes. That may very well be foreshadowing exactly what will unite our heroes toward one goal. However unlikely this end will be will be up to debate and speculation. So I’ll leave that upto you.
What I can attempt to piece together is that we see Zod’s body being taken away and later wee see a piece scene with a coffin like box marked USAMRIID on it. USAMRIID is the US Military’s Biological Research arm. They basically work with health orgnizations to prevent global outbreaks. But–with any good conspiracy theory, I believe we might be seeing a snippet from the film that is trying to inform us that Zod’s body may become part of some experiments and or confirm the military attempting to understand or make weapons to defend against Superman…possibly even leading to a completely new interpretation of what Doomsday may potentially be and become in this film franchise. I know…thin. But it’s out there. I’ve predicted the possibility of Doomsday and or Darkseid in the past. The more we see of BvS the more likely the possibility that a variant concept for Doomsday is becoming more and more plausible.
Finally of course we get a variety of moments where Batman and Superman are finally squared off. No more cat and mouse. Something that may have been sought after by Superman under pressure from his own concern about Batman’s methods vs Batman’s need to deal justice to who he might consider a threat.
To potentially a minor glimpse of the possible moment just before we hear those fateful words from Bruce:
” I want you to remember, Clark…in all the years to come…in your most private moments…I want you to remember…my hand…at your throat…I want…you to remember…the one man who beat you.”
