Further to the announcement of the opening and closing films for this year’s 59th London Film Festival, the organisers have today revealed that Todd Haynes’ critically-acclaimed drama Carol will be the festival’s American Express Gala. In addition, the first trailer for the film has appeared online, which you can view below…
The film, which opened to rave reviews at Cannes earlier this year, will receieve its UK premiere at the festival on October 14th, with director Haynes and stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara in attendance. Based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith called The Price of Salt, the film tells the story of “a woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Mara), who is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life. She meets Carol (Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage.”
Clare Stewart, the festival’s director, said the film is a “deeply romantic, emotionally honest love story….. at its most intoxicating and immaculate.”
The full program for the festival will be released in September 1st, and runs from October 7th to October 18th. Carol is set for release on November 27th.
