Star Wars: The Force Awakens breaks IMAX records with $6.5 million in advanced sales

October 21, 2015 by Luke Owen

Not only has Star Wars: The Force Awakens broken the Internet (it crashed our site and YouTube yesterday), it has now broken IMAX records for advanced ticket sales.

IMAX announced that single-day pre-sale tickets for Star Wars: The Force Awakens have come in at an estimated $6.5 million, which broke the single-day previous record – by some margin – of less than $1 million.

Now, the average rule of thumb to estimate how much a movie will take from IMAX alone (going by previous movies) is to multiply its single day sales by six. If that’s the case, Star Wars: The Force Awakens could make $39 million from IMAX sales alone on its opening weekend.

“The only words to describe the first day of IMAX worldwide advance ticket sales for Star Wars: The Force Awakens are ‘record-shattering’,” commented Greg Foster, senior executive VP, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment. “We’re seeing sell-outs across the board – from Hollywood to London, to Sparks, Nevada, and everywhere in between. The fan reaction to the latest trailer and demand for this film in IMAX is unprecedented and we couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this phenomenon and share it with our partners at Disney, Lucasfilm, J.J. Abrams and the entire filmmaking team.”
