It had been rumoured since the January 4th NJPW Tokyo Dome show when the news broke that AJ Styles – along with Shinske Nakamura, Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson – had all handed their notice in to go to WWE. And now we know for sure, “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles is officially a WWE Superstar – and he debuted at last night’s Royal Rumble.
Styles was the third entrant in the Royal Rumble match, which was for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and won by Triple H. He lasted 20+ minutes into the match, which was the second longest stint behind Roman Reigns and Chris Jericho. Styles was eliminated by Kevin Owens who screamed “welcome to WWE” as he did so.
Styles did get a few eliminations under his belt, but didn’t do any of his trademark spots apart from the Pele Kick.
We’ll have a better idea of what’s next for AJ Styles following tonight’s Raw. Although he was eliminated by Owens, it looks like they’re going to have him face Sami Zayn at WrestleMania. Zayn re-debuted in the Rumble last night and eliminated Owens as revenge for injuring him in storyline last year. Owens crashed an NXT house show two weeks ago, which was shown on last week’s NXT television show.
