Last night WWE took over Orlando to present the 2016 Royal Rumble, the first step on the Road to WrestleMania. It was a hot crowd for most of the night which saw some surprise debuts, returns and a conclusion that saw a new WWE World Heavyweight Champion crowned.
Roman Reigns had been taken out by The League of Nations earlier in the Rumble match, where he was defending his WWE World Heavyweight Championship. As Sheamus came out as #29, Reigns returned to clear house. However, he was stopped by entry #30 – Triple H. The COO of the company hadn’t been seen since December’s TLC (unless you watched NXT Takeover: London) and he was out to get his revenge on the man who took him out – Roman Reigns. It came down to Reigns, Triple H and Dean Ambrose, and Triple H eliminated Reigns before dumping Ambrose over the top rope to become the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
It now looks like Triple H will defend the title in the main event of WrestleMania, presumably against Roman Reigns. Also set up for WrestleMania was Bray Wyatt vs. Brock Lesnar and Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn, who made a surprise appearance to eliminate Owens.
AJ Styles – using that name – also made his WWE debut to a massive ovation from the crowd, and lasted a long time before being eliminated by Kevin Owens.
