Lucha Underground is back! And we’ve got a brand new Gift of the Gods Champion and the first time a female competitior has gone from the Lucha Underground Championship…
The show opens with Vampiro in a psychiatric ward where they tell him he’s nearly ready to be free. His psychiatrist asks if he’s had any nightmares or hallucinations and we get some highlights from the last season of Lucha Underground. Vampiro says he’s fine, and the doctor gives him some meds and sets him free. He meets Matt Striker outside, and he tells them they’ve been invited back to The Temple, which has become a much darker place since Mil Muertes took over.
At The Temple, Katrina is in Cueto’s office when Fenix walks in and asks for a match with Mil Muertes for the Lucha Underground Championship. She promises him he can have a match next week, so long as he is still Gift of the Gods Champion – which he has to defend now.
1. King Cuerno vs. Fenix for the Gift of the Gods Championship
If you’re new to Lucha Underground, the Gift of the Gods Championship is like Money in the Bank and it guarantees you a title shot, but you have to defend it.
They did some Lucha Libre early, but the Cuerno drilled Fenix with a draping DDT to the outside and then hit the suicide dive through the ropes. Incredible action to kick things off. Fenix fires back however with a springboard dropkick from the second rope and a diving armdrag. He then hits a handspring cutter and knocks Cuerno to the outside. Fenix then hits a corkscrew splash to the outside where he seemed to spin forever. Cuerto fires back with a wicked superkick and the pair exchange various kicks. Fenix hits another handspring cutter and rolls it through into a Dragon Sleeper, but Cuerno reverses it into a Surfboard. Fenix gets Cuerno up onto the top rope and then hits a double footstomp to the back of the head for a nearfall. Cuerno fires back and hits the Thrill of the Hunt for another nearfall. He then runs into a thunderous superkick from Fenix who then misses a 450 splash. Cuerno then hits a spinning package tombstone piledriver and gets the win to become the new Gift of the Gods Champion. An awesome opening match for the second season and a perfect introduction to new viewers.
Before the first ad break, we see Son of Havoc, Ivelisse and Angelico walk into The Temple.
Back from the break and the former Trios Champs are with Katrina who tells them they’ve been ordered to fight each other. Havoc tells Katrina they’ve spent the last year trying to get on the same page, but Katrina tells them the winner of the match will get a title shot against Mil Muertes tonight. They seem very cool with this. Ivelisse tells Katrina that she’s coming for her when she wins the title.
In the locker room, King Cuerno puts his title in his locker and Katrina reminds him that they have a deal. He tells her she has nothing to worry about – and neither does Mil. Katrina disappears and Cuerno looks concerned.
2. Son of Havoc vs. Ivelisse vs. Angelico for a shot at Mil Muertes
Angelico tries to get Ivelisse into a test of strength, but then puts his hand up to high so she can’t reach. She then kicks and slaps him hard. She then gives Havoc a huge slap too and hits Angelico with a pretty sloppy hurricanrana. They run around each other into the opposite corners, but Angelico accidently hits Ivelisse HARD in the face with a jumping knee strike. While he tries to help her recover, Havoc hits a high springboard crossbody from the second rope for a nearfall. They tease a Tower of Doom spot, but Angelico holds Havoc for Ivelisse to crossbody him – only for Havoc to get out of the way. Ivelisse traps Havoc in the ropes and kicks him in the chest ten times before dodging out of the way of Angelico diving into her. She then gives him a standing enzighuri for a nearfall. Havoc hits Ivelisse with a spinning backbreaker, and throws her to the outside. Angelico tries to do the same, but Havoc bounces out of it and sends him to the outside instead. He then dives out with a Suicide Dive to take out Angelico, and then dives to the other side to take out Ivelisse. Back in the ring and Havoc gives a double footstomp to the back of Angelico and then a standing moonsault. Angelico tries to set him up for a superplex, but Havoc drops him. He stands up, but Ivelisse knocks him and then rolls up Angelico for the win. The ending was a bit flat given all the crazy action between the bells, but this was a lot of fun.
We cut to several hundred miles from The Temple, and a car pulls up. A trio of guys are looking for an underground fighting tournament, and they ask Angela Fong if she’s heard about it. She tells them to follow her.
Ivelisse is still in the ring with Son of Havoc and Angelico as Mil Muertes ascends from his throne above the rafters and walks down to the ring. Katrina walks out of Cueto’s office and joins his walk. From out of nowhere, The Disciples of Death surround the ring and the babyfaces are cornered. They try to fight them off, but Katrina grabs Ivelisse by the hair and holds her back, leaving Havoc and Angelico to be thrown out of the ring and dragged to the back.
3. Ivelisse vs. Mil Muertes for the Lucha Underground Championship
Ivelisse is thrown down immediately, but she gets back up and throws punches and kicks that have no effects on her much larger foe. Striker and Vampiro put over Ivelisse’s MMA background, but she’s no match for Muertes. He throws her around like a ragdoll and everytime she tries to fight back, he knocks her back down. Ivelisse got a couple of hope spots including a choke hold, but Muertes snapped her into a bear hug and then launched her half way across the ring. There’s a tremendous spot where Ivelisse gets him in a Triangle Choke and he lifts her off the ground with one arm, but she uses his momentum to put her over the ropes and extend out the arm. Muretes though kicks the holy hell out of her and she falls to the outside of the ring. With Muretes stunned and selling his arm, Ivelisse manages to land a Tornado DDT for a fantastic nearfall. Katrina slinks into the ring to distract Ivelisse. Muertes charges across the ring and Ivelisse gets out of the way and he spears Katrina to death leading to Ivelisse rolling him up for another nearfall. The crowd is going ballistic! Ivelisse charges across the ring but Muertes reverses her momentum into a powerslam and then gives her the Flatliner for the win.
After the match, Katrina kneels over Ivelisse to give her the Lick of Death, but she orders Mil Muertes to give her another Flatliner. He lifts up her prone body, but out runs Prince Puma to make the save. He superkicks Muertes and he gets Ivelisse out of the ring. As they head up the stairs, Pentagon Jr. appears and gives Muertes the Backstabber. They cut to Vampiro a few times as Pentagon is a former pupil of his, possibly leading to a storyline down the line. Pentagon then grabs the arm of Mil Muertes and snaps it back, possibly breaking it in the process. He stands tall as Lucha Underground goes off the air. After the credits, the three guys from earlier pull up to Dario Cueto. One of them insults Angela and she kicks his ass. Cueto then charges the $20 to fight and unlocks the door to allow them in. When they ask who’s fighting tonight, he tells them they are and we hear a clattering of noises and deathly screams as MATANZA gets three new victims.
If you’re a fan of professional wrestling, do yourself a favour and seek out Lucha Underground. It’s so much fun and it’s something completely different. If you can get past the fact it’s shot like a movie and not a sport event, you’ll have a blast. The opener was incredibly fun, the triple threat was great and the main event had amazing drama. It’s so good to have Lucha Underground back.
