In other first look news, the debut official image – i.e. one not of Benedict Cumberbatch sipping coffee in between takes from 80 feet away – of Doctor Strange has been released. Marvel mastermind Kevin Fiege has spoken about how Cumberbatch’s popularity nearly cost him the role of Sorcerer Supreme, and Mads Mikkelsen has been confirmed as the film’s main villain. Because, you know, he’s got an evil Danish accent.Apparently he’s playing Blofeld.
Elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thanos won’t appear in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Black Panther will directly link into Avengers: Infinity War and James Gunn has praised Captain America: Civil War as one of the best Marvel movies ever. But, then again, Gunn says most movies are the best Marvel movies ever. Even ones that aren’t Marvel movies. His special power is hyperbole.“Guys, I gotta tell ya, this Josh Trank is gonna be a star!”
About Captain America: Civil War…a huge spoiler – if true – has emerged this week about the film’s plot. For more superhero shizzle, read The Week in Spandex. Some reports say there will be fisticuffs.
In sequel and adaptation news, Alien: Covenant will take place 10 years after the events of Prometheus (the further away, the better), Dimension has lost the rights to make any more Halloween movies, new images of Michael Fassbender’s Assassin’s Creed have been released, Quentin Tarantino is talking to Uma Thuram about Kill Bill Vol. 3, and Bob Iger wants to save another of your childhood favourites from the Law of Diminishing George Lucas Returns: a new Indiana Jones movie is coming.“Chewie…we’re home.”
But the most exciting movie news this week is the confirmation of Christopher Nolan’s next project – a World War II epic about the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation, starring Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance. 2016 might have only just begun, but now July 21st, 2017 can’t come soon enough.
May the Movies be with you.
