There was a lot of talk last year about whether the superhero bubble had burst. Avengers: Age of Ultron made less than its predecessor, Ant-Man’s opening weekend was Marvel’s second lowest, and Fantastic Four was, well, not that fantastic.
Enter Disney chairman Bob Iger – the man who ultimately decides the fate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (think Corporate Thanos). He said the MCU will “go on forever,” and that Star Wars will continue beyond Episode IX.
It’s great news all round. Especially if that means we get an IG-88 spin-off trilogy. The exact moment Chris Evans realises he’s contracted to play Captain America until 2086.
If the prospect of more Cheadle isn’t enough to get you excited, the first image of Tom Holland on-set of Civil War has been shared, hanging out in what looks to be the Avengers’ quinjet. His July 2017 Spider-Man solo movie is now set for an IMAX release, which will be far more impressive than the set photo.“It’ll look bigger on the IMAX screen. Trust us.”
Also set for release around that time is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which director James Gunn has been oversharing all week, posting photos of the first table read and rehearsals, as well as revealing the film’s post-credits scene is already written. He’s stayed quiet on whether the sequel will add three new members to the team, though, leaving the Howard the Duck dream still alive.CGI this.
The line-up certainly won’t include The Incredible Hulk. He’s far too busy being stuck in character right quagmire with Universal and hanging out with Norse gods. Mark Ruffalo has revealed that Thor: Ragnarok will begin a significant three film arc for the big, green guy, along with Infinity War Parts 1 and 2. With The Hulk as Thor’s co-star, and What We Do in the Shadows director Taika Waititi giving the film his unique deadpan humour, the movie is taking shape as one of Phase III’s most offbeat instalments. And about Waititi’s aforementioned vampire comedy – it’s sequel will be called We’re Wolves.“We’re Werewolves, not Swear-Wolves.”
