On Wednesday morning, the day of Deadpool’s release in the UK, 20th Century Fox green lit the superhero movie’s sequel. The film is tracking high for an opening weekend at the box office and the majority of reviews and fan reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. But, considering Fox’s recent history with announcing sequels before a film is even released, it’s surprising they announced Deadpool 2 so publicly.
Before Fantastic Four bombed at the box office last summer, Fox had already announced it’s X-Verse movie release slate for the next few years – including a sequel to Marvel’s First Family. But then Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four opened. Just a couple of months later, Fox quietly removed Fantastic Four 2 from their schedule.
Deadpool 2 has been long rumoured for Fantastic Four 2’s original June 9th 2017 release slot, and now with the Merc-with-a-Mouth sequel confirmed, we asked Deadpool’s writers – Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick – if they would make fun of the ditched movie in their own sequel (listen to the full audio in the Flickering Myth Podcast #13):
“If that were our release date, then probably yes,” said Rhett. “I don’t know, it’s easier for us to pile on movies that Ryan (Reynolds) was in, and have Ryan making fun of, than it is other folk’s movies. It just feels a little less mean-spirited. So I don’t know. Would we make fun of Fantastic Four? I would say there’s nothing off limits, so you never know.”

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool.
