DC and Turkish Airlines had two Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice commercials placed in last night’s Superbowl, announcing the airline’s new routes to Metropolis and Gotham.
In the latter, amongst shots of Bruce Wayne discussing rebuilding his beloved Gotham after the events of Man of Steel, the cityscape twice shows a building called ACE Chemicals.
ACE Chemicals is known as one of The Joker’s most prominent origin stories (definitively told in Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke). There, a stand-up comedian with no name is dressed up as the infamous gangster ‘Red Hood’. He falls into a vat of chemicals after a showdown with a young Batman, permanently bleaching his skin white, and birthing The Joker.
A very similar scene is shown in the most recent Suicide Squad trailer, where Dr. Harleen Quinzel (who later becomes The Joker’s lover and partner-in-crime Harley Quinn) is lifted out a vat of green liquid. This has led some to believe that Harley’s origin story will be based on DC Comics’ most recent version, where The Joker essentially recreates his own creation on Dr. Quinzel. Reports that ACE Chemicals will feature in Suicide Squad suggest that these scenes will take place in Gotham.
These kinds of company name Easter Eggs were heavily featured in 2013’s Man of Steel, with LexCorp, Wayne Enterprises, S.T.A.R. Labs (the company responsible for Cyborg) and Blaze Comics (the publisher of Booster Gold books) all being featured.
Also, in Lex Luthor’s Fortune Magazine interview late last year, as part of Batman v Superman’s inventive marketing campaign, a reference was made to Kord Industries, the company owned by Ted Kord, otherwise known as The Blue Beetle.
Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set for release on March 25th 2016 and sees Zack Snyder directing a cast that includes returning Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill (Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), Harry Lennix (General Swanwick) and Christina Wren (Carrie Farris) alongside Ben Affleck (Argo) as Batman, Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6) as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) as The Flash, Jesse Eisenberg (Now You See Me) as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons (The Borgias) as Alfred Pennyworth, Holly Hunter (The Piano) as Senator Finch, Tao Okamoto (The Wolverine) as Mercy Graves, Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead) as Martha Wayne, Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen) as Thomas Wayne and Callan Mulvey (300: Rise of an Empire), Jena Malone (Sucker Punch) and Scoot McNairy (Argo) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
