Boardwalk Empire‘s Michael Pitt has landed the villain role in the upcoming film adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed.
Pitt, who played James “Jimmy” Darmody in the hit HBO show, will star alongside Scarlett Johansson (Hail, Caesar!) as a character referred to as the Laughing Man who is part man, part robot and has “a unique sense of style and has been described as a bad guy filtered through the lens of a street artist.” British actor Sam Riley (Control) had previously been in talks for the role.
Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) is directing the film, which sees Johansson in the title role as “a special-ops cyborg in a task force named Section 9 that deals in the most dangerous criminals and extremists.”
Ghost in the Shell is set for release on March 31st, 2017.
