Yet despite Snyder, Batman v Superman is tracking $154 million for its opening weekend in the US, and is beating Marvel on social media by 500%. Confused as to what those numbers mean? Then listen to this week’s Flickering Myth Podcast to hear myself and Luke be just as confused.DC just took out War Machine.
Snyder also teased the Justice League’s involvement in the movie this week, saying they only “play a very small role.” Once upon a time, before the 2007 Writers Guild of America strike, Mad Max: Fury Road’s George Miller was to make Justice League: Mortal. It, of course, never happened, which the director reflected on this week. He’s been named jury president of this year’s Cannes film festival, though, so it isn’t all bad.Actually…maybe it’s for the best not to have that blue skirt.
Elsewhere in production land, Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn is working on an Asian action thriller with the writers of Skyfall and Spectre; Elizabeth Banks has been perfectly cast as Rita Repulsa in the Power Rangers reboot; Vin Diesel announced Fast and Furious 9 and 10 on Instagram; Pope Francis won’t be making his onscreen acting debut (GOD DAMMIT); and Steven Soderbergh is working on a film with Channing Tatum, because he can’t decide whether he’s retired or not.Channing Tatum: so fun he brings directors out of retirement.
But the most exciting news all week – to me, at least – is the casting of Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire’s Jimmy Darmod), a terrific actor, as main villain Laughing Man in the live-action Ghost in the Shell remake. He was always my top pick to play Joker. This is pretty close. He could also play a really good David Lynch.
And finally, all the big Star Wars news: a supporting character from Star Wars: The Force Awakens isn’t as dead as previously thought, potential details on Forest Whitaker’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story character have emerged, Kevin Smith has spoken about his Stormtrooper cameo and Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow plans to shoot the movie in actual space. He also wanted to build a time machine to shoot actual dinosaur footage for Jurassic World.
To play us out, here’s the most recent Suicide Squad trailer recut with scenes from DC’s animated series. And for extra Suicide Squad fun, check out our latest video – THEORY: Enchantress is Suicide Squad’s main villain.
May the Movies be with you.
