For episode #3 of Flickering Myth’s weekly video series Jump Cut, we’ve edited together all the footage we’ve seen so far of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (three trailers, two Turkish Airline SuperBowl specials, two full clips and countless TV spots) into a SUPER-TRAILER. But not just any SUPER-TRAILER…one with the scenes arranged in a proposed chronological order, i.e. how they will appear in the final film. Please do agree or disagree with the placing of each scene and shot in the comments below.
This project started out as a way to figure out Batman v Superman’s plot structure. We’d done one not so long ago for Star Wars: The Force Awakens before that movie’s release. But whereas that SUPER-TRAILER clocked in at around 4 1/2 minutes, the Batman v Superman one was over 8.
Warner Bros. have released double the amount of marketing for BvS than Disney did for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, yet somehow the latter maintained a higher degree of anticipation. Of course, a lot of that has to do with the ‘Star Wars’ name, but the title ‘Batman v Superman’ is no slouch itself. You have to consider whether the film’s excess marketing has harmed the public’s appetite for the movie – a sentiment reportedly picked up upon by the higher ups at Warner Bros.
Jump Cut’s Batman v Superman SUPER-TRAILER, then, became a mediation on film marketing itself, and how much has been given away before the movie’s release – almost 10 minutes of its 151 minute running time.
With Star Wars, not only did the marketing unveil very little footage, hardly anything was given away about story and character. Watching BvS’ SUPER-TRAILER below shows Warner Bros. have applied the complete opposite tactic: not only revealing a significant amount of footage before the movie’s release, but also revealing large elements of story from beginning to end – including the criminally spoilerific exchange between Batman and Superman at the trailer’s end, essentially diffusing the central selling point of the entire film: that it’s not so much ‘Batman VERSUS Superman’ as ‘Batman and Superman fight for a bit before becoming Super Friends’.
