Veteran auteur Woody Allen is returning to the French Riviera this May to open the Cannes film festival with his latest offering.
Allen will launch the glamorous gala with Cafe Society, a period picture starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Parker Posey, Steve Carell and Blake Lively. According to the festival organisers, the movie “tells the story of a young man who arrives in Hollywood during the 1930s hoping to work in the film industry, falls in love, and finds himself swept up in the vibrant café society that defined the spirit of the age”.
Cafe Society marks the fourteenth Out of Competition selection for Allen, ranging from 1979’s Manhattan to 2015’s An Irrational Man.
The 69th edition of the Cannes film festival will run from May 11th to 22nd. This year’s competition jury president is Mad Max director George Miller.
The festival’s line-up is due to be unveiled on April 14th.
