With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice finally in cinemas, Flickering Myth’s Oli Davis counts down his top 5 teases in the movie for DC’s super-team-up film Justice League.
Obviously, spoilers to follow…
SPIDER-MAN TURNS UP!
Not really. I’m kidding. But practically everyone else does.
5. The Meta-Human Theory
The Meta-Human Theory is first explained in the movie by Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, and it can be summed up quite neatly as, ‘that super guy with the red cape, yeah, there’s probably more of him.’
Batman uncovers that Luthor’s company has been secretly tracking a few of them – each with their own snazzy character symbol, like they’re a new range of Apple products. It’s here where we get our first look at Ezra Miller’s super-speed hero Flash on some CCTV. ‘Super speed hero’ means he can go really fast. He doesn’t take amphetamines or anything.
In the footage, Flash stops a convenience story robbery by quickly darting around the shop and taking out the gunman.
We also get our first moving image of Aquaman, which is taken from a government underwater drone. ‘Wet Khal Drogo’ slowly comes out of a cave to confront the spying device with his trident, before quickly blowing it up.
There’s no Green Lantern symbol in all of this, by the way, but there is a Cyborg.
4. S.T.A.R. Labs and Cyborg
Cyborg isn’t one of the traditional founding members of the Justice League, but DC understandably wants some racial diversity amongst their A-Team, and Cyborg can tick the African American box on their equal opportunities form.
In Cyborg’s LexCorp file, there’s a video diary with the scientist Silas Stone. It shows his son Victor gruesomely hung up on a vertical operating table with half his body missing. Silas is trying to keep him alive, eventually using a strange metallic cube – maybe it’s the AllSpark from Transformers – to construct a new mechanical body.
It’s pretty gross, but most interesting is the timecode data on the video. It says S.T.A.R. Labs, which stands for Scientific and Technological Advanced Research and is one of the most prominent organisations in DC continuity. You might recognise this from Richard Schiff’s scientist character in Man of Steel, who is briefly identified as a S.T.A.R. Labs employee.
3. Wonder Woman’s Photo
Wonder Woman is going through LexCorp’s meta-human files because she is trying to get a photo back that belongs to her. That’s her MacGuffin in the movie, as it were. That’s not a rude thing, by the way, it means a generic plot device to move the story along.
The image is eventually revealed as Wonder Woman in what seems to be a warzone in the early 20th century. She’s standing next to Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor, a dude in a fez and a Native American guy. It’s kind of like a vintage Village People.
Wonder Woman later says that following the horrors around that photo in World War I, she withdrew from this world for 100 years. Lady, you got the best of it with World War I. It’s sequel was just around the corner.
