A first trailer has arrived online for director Nate Parker’s upcoming drama The Birth of a Nation. Based on the true story of Nat Turner, an enslaved African-American who led a rebellion of slaves in Virginia in 1831, the film sees Parker leading a cast that also includes Armie Hammer, Jackie Earle Haley, Gabrielle Union, Aunjanue Ellis, Aja Naomi King, Colman Domingo and Penelope Ann Miller. Take a look below after the official synopsis…
Set against the antebellum South, THE BIRTH OF A NATION follows Nat Turner (Nate Parker), a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities — against himself and his fellow slaves — Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.
The Birth of a Nation is set for release on October 7th.
