The Transformers franchise has been around for decades and dozens of iterations, showing no signs of slowing down as next year Michael Bay releases the fifth installment of his feature film franchise, Transformers: The Last Knight. Long before Bay started making Transformer films, though, there was another feature film that is often overlooked now: Transformers: The Movie. Shout! Factory and Hasbro Studios announced a distribution collaboration to bring the movie to Blu-ray on September 30th, 2016 to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The movie is being brought to HD from its original 35 mm print with a range of yet to be announced bonus features and collectible packaging.
Made in 1986, Transformers: The Movie was the first animated feature that also tied into the original animated series made between the second and third seasons. The movie was infamous, and still remains so, for killing Optimus Prime and many of the of the other G1 characters at the time. It also introduced several of the longstanding tropes found in many of the Transformers series: Unicron, the Matrix of Leadership, Megatron reformatted into Galavatron and, as mentioned, the death of Optimus Prime. For a look at the best scene of the movie (which Bay’s films have yet to match in my opinion), watch the video below.
The film has a pretty stellar voice cast, from original Optimus and Megatron voice actors Peter Cullen and Frank Welker respectively, to Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron, Judd Nelson as Hot Rod, Eric Idle as Wreck-Gar and Orson Welles in his final role as the planet-eater Unicron.
Stephen Davis, Hasbro’s Chief Content Officer and Executive Vice President, said “The Transformers franchise has been part of American popular culture for more than 30 years, developing into one of the most recognizable brands around the globe. “Transformers – The Movie played a huge role in the brand’s early success, laying the foundation for major motion pictures, several successful TV series, clothing and apparel, toys and much more. We are thrilled to work with Shout! Factory to deliver the original movie to fans in a completely remastered HD experience.”
Melissa Boag, Shout! Factory’s Senior Vice President of Kids & Family Entertainment, “Transformers – The Movie is a highly sought-after animated feature, boasting a large fan following and consumer interest. On its 30th anniversary, we look forward to celebrating this film by bringing it to North America on Blu-ray for the first time. Having worked closely with Hasbro Studios on top brands like animated series ‘Transformers Robots in Disguise,’ ‘G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero,’ ‘Transformers Prime,’ ‘My Little Pony,’ ‘My Little Pony Equestria Girls’ movies and more, this is incredibly exciting and important news for us. We look forward to bringing ‘Transformers – The Movie,’ featuring all-new HD transfer with stunning packaging and great extras to fans and on family home entertainment shelves.”
