The 06/20/16 edition of WWE Monday Night Raw reviewed in about 4 minutes – including two big WWE stars returning to TV (and John Laurinaitis), SHIELDBOWL announced with a triple threat between WWE Champion Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, a bad call by Michael Cole, and much more…
LUNATIC CHAMPION PROMO
The show opened on Dean Ambrose nearly forgetting his WWE Title in a cab on the way to the arena – what are you like, Dean? – to then cut a promo on winning the championship the previous night.
The usual interruptions took place – first Roman Reigns, then Seth Rollins, then a McMahon to make a match between them later that night. The main event’ll be Reigns vs Rollins to be the No.1 contender.
Roman was heckled by “You can’t wrestle chants” yet again. Not even taking the belt of THE GUY has endeared him to fans. Reigns responded with to the chanters with “sit down, take a sip of your beer and shut your mouth.” Which is considerably better than when he used to keep mentioning people’s tater tots.
JOHN LAURANITIUS RETURNS!!!!!!!!!!
Both Sasha Banks and Bray Wyatt returned on this episode, but I found myself popping most for John Lauranitius’ hoarse voice and bright red suit. I always really liked the guy.
He was the latest ex-GM to be treated like an outpatient wanting to manage either Smackdown or Raw. I’ve got an idea – they should decide the GMs with a Hell in a Cell match against The Undertaker.
The announcers echoed the WWE press release from earlier that day, saying that the brand split’s draft will be on the live 19th July episode of Smackdown.
Here’s the other stuff that happened…
SAMI ZAYN BEAT KEVIN OWENS
Kevin Owens’ losing streak continues after a surprise roll-up from Sami Zayn. Was this the final blowoff to their feud? Nope, they still hate each other. They continued to fight after the match and into the back.
ENZO AND CASS BEAT THE VAUDEVILLIANS
Enzo and Cass won in a quick match, a few opponent moves short of a squash. Enzo and Cass continue getting a big push, while The Vaudevillians become less and less of a threat.
JOHN CENA BEAT KARL ANDERSON (VIA DQ)
AJ Styles pretended to be sorry about the Galanderson attack on John Cena at Money in the Bank, and jokingly forced the tag team to apologise.
I’m glad they’re not doing the AJ/Galanderson tension route again. We saw that for two months in the Roman Reigns program, and The Club are a lot more entertaining like this.
BARON CORBIN BEAT ZACK RYDER
Remember when Zack Ryder won the Intercontinental title at Wrestlemania 32? No, nobody does. Who even has that title right now? The Miz? But he’s shooting a movie…Corbin beat Ryder decisively, which probably means they’ll be in a feud for the next four months.
TITUS O’NEIL BEAT RUSEV (VIA COUNTOUT)
Titus O’Neil’s match against Rusev never really got going. He just started beating on The Brute, who escaped through the crowd. The lesson here, is don’t push Titus. And Titus, don’t push anyone else.
CHARLOTTE BEAT PAIGE
After a bit of awkward interference, where Dana Boobs tried to put Charlotte’s leg on the rope and just ended up kind of hugging it instead, Charlotte retained her WWE Women’s Championship against Paige. And then Sasha Banks returned!
Which is cool, The Boss is back, but I wasn’t a fan of Paige being all buddy with Banks and holding up her arm at the end. Paige should want that title all for herself.
WYATT FAMILY RETURNS
And Banks wasn’t the only return – The Wyatt Family also came back to WWE television to a big babyface pop. Which New Day interrupted, setting up a program between them.
I love The New Day, but they always cheapen the more serious acts they feud with, like Galanderson last month. They suffer from being too cool. And now, the main event!
