Cast and crew members from Ex Machina director Alex Garland’s latest project, Annihilation, have been taking to Instagram for weeks now to share gorgeous photos from the film’s set, and now, thanks to The Film Stage, the images have all been put in one place. While cinematographer Rob Hardy is responsible for the bulk of the photos, others come from stars Gina Rodriguez and Tessa Thompson, who also appear in a few. Check them out below…
Typically, set photos are taken by outside photographers, journalists or onlookers from far distances and, as a result, turn out either blurry or distorted in some way. In this case, however, where the photographers are members of the production team, the set picture quality vastly improves. Despite there being a number of photos above, there’s not a clunker in the bunch; nearly each one highlights an incredible landscape and is stunning to look at.
It would be hard to believe that such environments won’t look anything but astonishing in the actual movie, especially considering how Garland has proven himself to be as gifted a visual artist as he is a storyteller. The visual style of Ex Machina was undeniably impressive and multifunctional, adding elements of suspense, beauty and, oftentimes, horror to the film.
Annihilation is based on an award-winning book by Jeff VanderMeer and follows Natalie Portman’s The Biologist as she leads a group of women on an expedition into an environmental disaster zone after her husband vanishes. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Oscar Isaac and David Gyasi also star in the science fiction thriller set for a 2017 release.
