In today’s WrestleTalk News, Kurt Angle talks about the rumours of his WWE return, a whole load of news about the brand split – including new sets, belts, music and who will be the *other* world champion – and Stone Cold Steve Austin has some very critical words for the current WWE product.
Kurt Angle Reveals Recent WWE Talks
Our top story today is all about the big revelations for WWE’s brand split – including which show will get a new set, and who is expected to be the other world champion – but first, is Kurt Angle returning to WWE?
A few weeks ago, Forbes listed Angle as one of the many ex-WWE stars the company had reached out to for a brand split return. Then, on Mark Madden’s radio show, your Olympic Hero said it was a ‘when, not if’ situation.
Angle revealed that he had recently spoken with WWE and Triple H about a return to the company and that they were all ‘on good terms’, but this was before the brand split was announced on the 25th May.
Now, in an interview with Sports Illustrated this week, Angle said:
“I had a talk with WWE. It’s confidential. I will not be returning for the draft. Possibly in the future, most likely next year, but that is not a guarantee. It was a loose conversation but I will be in touch with Triple H in the future.”
So either Angle thought his previous WWE chats meant more than they did, or someone from the company has told him to keep quiet about a possible imminent return.
Steve Austin Slams Current WWE Product
Since Wrestlemania 33, Raw has mostly been refreshingly watchable. Matches mean something more often than not, The Authority are kind of gone, and fresh talent from NXT or New Japan are getting the spotlight.
There’s one guy who isn’t impressed, though. And he’s given us the bottom line.
On a recent episode of the Steve Austin Show podcast, the Stone Cold one criticised Raw’s narrative structure and how predictable it has become:
“There’s just no interwoven storylines, which carries through the course of a Monday Night RAW, where something, a seed, is planted at the beginning of a Monday Night RAW and threaded through the entire show. It’s just match after match, segment, or in-ring segment, skit, whatever you want to call it, backstage promo.”
Stone Cold Steve went onto say that although they call this the ‘reality era’, it’s anything but reality, citing his Attitude Era storylines as far more edgy and daring. If WWE really want to succeed, he said, they need to push the envelope.
Hell yes, Steven. Hell yes.
