New photos from the set of Universal’s The Mummy, a reboot of the Brendan Fraser-led franchise of the same name, offer up a first look at Sofia Boutella’s titular villain, The Mummy, in full costume and makeup. Reportedly, the pictures, which come from ComingSoon.net (via the World Entertainment News Network), were taken in central London on Sunday and are the first to appear from the film since April, when stars Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis shot in Oxford, England. Despite having worked in the industry for a number of years, it was Boutella’s role in 2015’s Kingsman: The Secret Service as Gazelle that made her an in-demand actress overnight. Aside from The Mummy, Boutella is set to appear in another major studio film, Star Trek Beyond, later this year; coincidentally, if the trailers are any indication, she has been doused in quite a bit of makeup for that role as well.
Akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Mummy will be the first (or arguably second if the studio counts 2014’s Dracula Untold) movie in the Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe. Other projects set to follow The Mummy include solo movies built around Wolf Man, Van Helsing, Bride of Frankenstein and more. Presumably, the success or failure of The Mummy will dictate whether or not most of those film ever see the light of day.
Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and “Star Trek Beyond”) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
The Mummy is set for release on June 9th, 2017, with Alex Kurtzman directing a cast that includes Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation), Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle), Jake Johnson (New Girl), Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story: The People v O.J. Simpson), Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys).
