Back on the 22nd May, WWE shockingly announced that Cody Rhodes had been released from his contract. Rhodes later explained that he was frustrated with his creative direction in the company and wanted out. Just a few days later, his wife Brandi Rhodes – who worked as the WWE announcer Eden – also left the company.
Rhodes was quick to come up with a list of things he wanted to do with his post-WWE career, tweeting an image of his to-do list which included names like Adam Cole, Dalton Castle and Shibata. My to-do list has ‘find out purple Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle’s name’ and ‘buy sweet potatoes’. Cody Rhodes and I live very different lives.
He’s already ticked off a few of them. Rhodes pinned Kurt Angle at Northeast Wrestling’s Wrestling Under the Stars event on the 28th August, and he competed in PWG’s Battle of Los Angeles tournament last weekend. And now it looks like he can cross off a few more.
Speaking with Dave Meltzer at the PWG event, Rhodes said he has a deal with TNA in place, with plans to feud with ‘The Miracle’ Mike Bennett. Brandi did her husband’s ring announcing at Battle of Los Angeles, so she might also appear on Impact Wrestling as part of an act with Cody against Bennett and his real-life wife Maria Kanellis.
Where this gets interesting from a geeky, backstage deal perspective is that Rhodes has already been announced for Ring of Honor’s December pay-per-view Final Battle. In the past – most recently with Moose and Mike Bennett – TNA and ROH don’t allow talent to appear on each other’s shows. Meltzer brought this up with Cody, who said that his deals with TNA and ROH are non-exclusive.
But as Wrestling Observer Radio pointed out, Cody Rhodes might not be able to use his own name on television outside WWE. WWE reportedly own the rights to the ‘Cody Rhodes’ name because he never used it outside the company – but the thing is, it’s part of his legacy.
His real last name is Runnels, but the Rhodes name goes back nearly 50 years with his father Dusty. Dave Meltzer added, “he’s trying to work things out with [WWE] over that…But that’s exactly the case. If he’s in ROH on television or TNA, he cannot be Cody Rhodes.”
What’s Cody Rex doing in the Impact Zone?! Can you think of a better name? Pitch ’em in the comments…
