Thomas Roach gets hands on with Horizon Zero Dawn at EGX 2016…
Horizon Zero Dawn has been a game I have kept my eye on since its reveal at E3 last year. Hearing that it would be playable for the first time at EGX was very exciting and I am glad to have got the opportunity to try it out.
Before getting to play the game we were shown the trailer that debuted at E3 this year. After that we were given a tutorial of how to capture the mounts that we would need to help us navigate the world. We got a very limited vertical slice of gameplay at EGX but it was enough to satisfy me. This demo really only served to let us get use to the controls and too show off the beauty of the world that the developers have created. Before we started the demo we were informed that we could not access the map as it was removed from the vertical slice in order to hide its size. This could either be a positive or a negative, however I presume it was to hide how large the map is rather than how small it is. I am certainly hoping it is the former.
The game was very easy to pick up. Despite being walked through how to capture a mount before we got our hands on the game the controls felt very natural. My feelings may change when I get to play the game for a greater length of time but I feel it played like mixture of Uncharted and Far Cry. This certainly is good for me as I am a huge fan of both those games and would hope this comparison gives gamers an comparable impression if you don’t get the chance to play it yourself before its release.
Overall this is one of the games I am most excited for next year, getting a hands on experience with the game simply reinforced the hype I have for this game. With its beautiful graphics, intriguing setting and fun gameplay, Horizon Zero Dawn is one to keep an eye on over the coming months and worth a purchase when it is finally released.
