In comparison, Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe is so good, people are actively pitching to be a part of it. Yet another director has joined the Captain Marvel shortlist, and they’ll all be presenting their takes over the next few weeks.“Guys, I’ve got it – she gets given a green power ring that can form light constructs with her willpower!”
Others can’t stay away. Jon Favreau will be reprising his role of Happy Hogan in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tom Holland shared a moody set photo from the film this week, which doesn’t reveal much, but is freaking cool. While a Thor: Ragnarok image does exactly the opposite – unveiling Loki’s costume for the movie.Wait a second…
For a more irreverent superhero film, the first trailer for Mark Potts’ Spaghettiman has been released. There better be a Hot Fuzz “it’s just bolognaise” reference in there.Seems legit.
Boldly opening shortly before Doctor Strange, there’s another superhero movie coming – Max Steel, based on the cartoon series, which now has a new trailer. For more childhood revisioning, here’s the latest image from the Power Rangers reboot. The Max Steel of my day had a metal arm. This kid ain’t got no metal arm!
The next movie genre boom was supposed to be with July’s Warcraft movie – optimistically titled ‘Warcraft: The Beginning‘ in some territories. But it only really worked in China, where it was hugely successful. The director Duncan Jones has given a very candid interview about his frustrations with the film, and it’s “death of 1,000 cuts”.‘Death of 1,000 cuts’ isn’t a WoW special attack.
If Warcraft was more of a success, perhaps the risk-averse Sony wouldn’t have quietly dropped the Uncharted movie from their release schedule. At least Alicia Vikander’s Tomb Raider reboot is still happening.(For now.)
In zombie movie news, Zombieland 2 might actually materialise after all these years, while the zombie-like plague in Maze Runner: The Death Cure will resume production in February after its lead actor Dylan O’Brien fractured his orbital socket after an on-set accident early this year. And Mel Gibson has given an update on his Passion of the Christ sequel The Resurrection. Which is kind of a zombie movie.Zombie Jesus!
Guardians of the Galaxy and Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan has joined the Jumanji sequel in what Rock ‘The Dwayne’ Johnson claims is “the most important role in the movie”. With this image of his character, and that production will take place in Hawaii, does that mean the movie will take place inside the game…?Still scary.
Another day, another rumoured shortlist for who will be the next James Bond. It’s pretty much the same names as always, just in a different order.Tom Hardy, Tom Hardy, Tom Hardy, Tom Hardy and Tom Hardy.
Much more exciting is the gathering cast for Richard Linklater’s new movie. Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne have all joined Last Flag Flying.
To play us out, here’s the first trailer for Christopher Guest’s Nextflix original movie Mascots – the comedy director’s first film since 2006’s For Your Consideration.
“Mascots don’t die, they just hang in a closet.”
May the Movies be with you.
