Next year’s Royal Rumble is set to take place on the 29th January in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Just like Wrestlemania this year, WWE will presumably try to top their Royal Rumble attendance record – which was set in the same venue exactly 20 years prior with 60,477 people.
And, if everything goes more tits up than Dana Brooke on a sun lounger, they can always just ignore 80% of the stadium like TNA did for Lockdown back in 2013.
To stop that from happening, WWE need some really big draws. There’s already been rumours that the Seth Rollins vs Triple H match is being brought forward from its original Wrestlemania 33 date to the Rumble, Bubba Ray Dudley teased an Alamodome return on Twitter earlier this week, and Stone Cold and The Undertaker are rumoured possible cameos.
The latest idea, however…well, it’s more teasing than Dana Brooke on a sun lounger: AJ Styles vs Shawn Michaels.
Now, before we get into this, PWInsider are reporting there is no word that Styles vs HBK is actually being planned by WWE. All this comes from the Champ that Teases the Camp, AJ Styles, who said in a recent interview with Sport Illustrated:
“I would love the opportunity to wrestle [Michaels]. I’d love to learn from him, but who’s to say if that’s going to happen. Right now, it’s all speculation and rumors that I’m finding out like everyone else is, but man, what a match that would be.”
It’s all speculation and rumours. But then AJ tweeted this:
A reportedly fan-made match graphic of AJ and Michaels at Royal Rumble, with the caption: interesting photo….is it not?
Yeah, it is interesting, Styles. YOU KNOW IT IS.
Michaels retired back at Wrestlemania XXVI in 2010, losing in a Career vs Streak match to the Undertaker. And he’s accomplished quite a rare feat in wrestling – and rap music – ever since: he hasn’t come back.
Michaels has gotten physical in the ring since then – most recently at this year’s Wrestlemania, super-kicking Alberto Del Rio and King Barrett. But he hasn’t returned for a full proper match.
So HBK seems pretty adamant that he won’t wrestle again. Losing to The Undertaker like that was a hell of a way to go out. But now here comes the seeds of doubt.
Back in August, Triple H revealed that he’d offered HBK a full-time position as a trainer at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, and Michaels even helped out at an NXT taping. Perhaps being around wrestling again has made him want to return for one last match.
