Between the announcement of a remake of the The Lion King and our first look at Emma Watson and Dan Stevens in Beauty and the Beast, it’s been a busy couple of weeks for news on Disney’s remakes of their animated back catalogue, and now comes word on a release date for another.
Walt Disney Pictures has officially set a November 2nd 2018 release for its live-action version of Mulan, EW is reporting. The movie is based on a script by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek, with rewriters from Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, and is described as a combination of the animated film and the classic Chinese tale about the skilled female warrior. The studio will soon launch a global casting search to find a Chinese actress for the lead role.
As it happens, Sony also has its own live-action Mulan movie in development, which will be shot in China with a mostly Chinese cast. There’s no word on a release date for that movie just yet, but Sony will need to move fast if it wants to beat Disney into theaters.
