The Week in Movies discusses the last seven days in cinema, including the first trailers for both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Logan, Lando Calrissian being cast in the Young Han Solo Star Wars spin-off movie, and more…

Last week we opened with the newly released trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and how it might be one of the finest teasers ever made – despite what Kylo Ren says.
A few days later, out comes one for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.CAN YOU GIVE US A MINUTE TO RECOVER, DISNEY!?
It’s unfair to compare the two. Rogue One’s is far superior, and GotGV2’s is only a ‘sneak peak’ according to director James Gunn. An 87-second sneak peak.
That used to be called a ‘first trailer’. Now it’s a trailer for a trailer. God dammit, Hollywood marketing… The rest of the Flickering Myth team had similarly mixed feelings.Hug it out?
But it’s hard to complain. We get more Guardians this way. And to accompany the sneak-peak-teaser-trailer-glimpse-footage-extended-clip, we also got the movie’s brilliant first poster: a black and white group shot of Nebula, Yondu, Rocket, Gomorra, Star-Lord, Baby Groot and Drax as though they’re about to drop a new album.Obviously.
You wouldn’t think Vin Diesel’s gravelly voice suits itself to a cutesy, cartoonish character. But he’s back to play Baby Groot in GotGV2, and has been teasing what to expect.Drax is stumped.
Speaking of ‘what to expect’, we still have no idea what director Taika Waititi’s take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe will look like with Thor: Ragnarok. In a Reddit AMA, he promised the film will be the most “out there” of the MCU, and that it’ll have a very “Taika-esque” tone. Given that ‘Taika-esque’ means mockumentaries on vampires…we still don’t know what to expect.
But whatever it is……it better have Darryl.
Hopefully Spider-Man: Homecoming can build on the character’s excellent cameo from Captain America: Civil War. And hopefully Spider-Man 2 can build on Spider-Man: Homecoming’s hopeful building of the character’s excellent cameo from Captain America: Civil War. Tom Holland revealed to Women’s Wear Daily at the New York Film Festival that a sequel is already in the development web. Which begs the question……why was Tom Holland talking to Women’s Wear Daily?
The next film in the MCU is out this week in the UK – Doctor Strange. I’m lucky enough to be chatting with Mads Mikkelsen, Scott Derrickson, Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong (‘Benedict’ is the new ‘Chris’ in Marvel’s casting strategy), so look out for the interviews on Flickering Myth’s site and podcast over the next few days. Especially because the latter has been confirmed for Avengers: Infinity War along with Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill.So that’s all I’ll probably ask him about.
GotGV2 wasn’t the only comic book movie to get its first trailer this week. After two weeks of teasing images, like the first looks at The Reavers and Stephen Merchant from the film, 20th Century Fox unleashed Logan’s debut teaser.“That was a hell of a Bolognese.”
Like I said in the Flickering Myth reaction to the trailer, you can put Johnny Cash’s rendition of Hurt over someone washing the dishes and it’d be epic. Plus at a mere 1 minute 54 seconds, who’s to say this isn’t just a sneak-peak-teaser-trailer-glimpse-footage-extended-clip ahead of an even longer trailer to be released next week?God dammit, Hollywood marketing…
