Rumblings of Kurt Angle’s WWE return first started around Wrestlemania 32, when it came out that our Olympic Hero was in the same city as WWE’s biggest show of the year. But it didn’t happen.
Then Angle said he had met with Triple H to talk about a return to the company, and that it’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when.
Then the Brand Split was announced, and we all got excited for a surprise Angle draft pick to Smackdown…but that didn’t happen either.
This means that whenever Kurt Angle does an interview, he’s going to get asked about a WWE return.
He appeared on this week’s Steve Austin Show podcast to talk about how great his life is on the Indy scene since leaving TNA – particularly in the UK – and how he’s carefully scheduled his limited wrestling dates this year, mentioning Rey Mysterio, Cody Rhodes, Alberto Del Rio, Joe Coffey and Zack Sabre Jr. But why those guys?
“…it’s just about getting my reps in. Next year I plan on going back somewhere. I don’t know where yet, but I wanted to keep myself mentally sharp.”
There’s only one place really he could be planning to go back to. I doubt it’s TNA. But it seems Kurt has been sitting by the phone since April.
“I don’t even think WWE is going to call me. I sat around, took this year off, thinking they would get a hold of me, that they’d want to do something.”
So perhaps it will take a WWE 2K18 video game deal to get him back in the company. Or, because it’s wrestling, he’s just throwing us off the scent for his Royal Rumble return. Please the Royal Rumble return.
Someone else who has come back to WWE, albeit with quite a different reputation, is Spirit Squad member Kenny Dykstra, who’s been making regular appearances on Smackdown Live. PWInsider are reporting that WWE might be offering Kenny and his tag team partner Mikey Mondo another run with the company after their current storyline with The Miz.
This gets interesting because of what happened the last time Kenny was with WWE in 2008: he was engaged to then-WWE superstar Mickie James, and found out she was cheating on him with John Cena. Hustle, loyalty and respect.
Kenny recalled the incident on Twitter back in 2012:
“He was messing with MJ so I got moved to Smackdown so they could further mess. I jobbed, got fired.”
Back then he also tweeted about why he didn’t expose this when he was released in 2008:
“If I spoke out it would have ruined my chance of returning to WWE. Now I’m set with what I’m doing and don’t care if I get banned. … I’m ruining any chance of a WWE return by doing this I’m sure. But it doesn’t matter to me.”
But what about that John Cena heat, again taken from Kenny’s Twitter back in 2012?
“I have no heat towards him. He has heat towards me. I really don’t care either way. I’m just being honest. Truthfully I do like john, but if u ask me a question im gonna answer it truthfully.”
PWInsider say there is no current heat between them because they move in “two different worlds” backstage. But, in a strange piece of timing, Mickie James will also be returning to the company for a one-off appearance to face Asuka at NXT Takeover: Toronto later this month.
