GKIDS and and Fathom Events have announced that they are partnering up to celebrate Hayao Miyazaki’s birthday and the 20th anniversary of Princess Mononoke with a theatrical re-release for the anime classic for two days only on Thursday, January 5th and Monday, January 9th.
“Twenty years after its release, Princess Mononoke remains an undisputed animated triumph and one of the most thrilling adventures ever produced,” said GKIDS’ President Eric Beckman. “Following the great success of Spirited Away [the first day of Spirited Away’s limited showing grossed over $800K] returning to theaters, we are excited to present Princess Mononoke in a theatrical setting to fans both old and new. It’s also a fitting way to celebrate Miyazaki’s birthday as we remind ourselves of the cinematic gifts he has given audiences over the years.”
The January 5th screening features the original Japanese audio with English subtitles, while the January 9th screenings consists of the English dub featuring the voice talents of Gillian Anderson, Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Minnie Driver, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Billy Bob Thornton. In addition to the feature content, movie audiences will view the never-before-released in North America 1995 Miyazaki-directed music video by the Japanese rock duo Chage & Aska for their song “On Your Mark.”
While defending his village from a demonic boar-god, the young warrior Ashitaka becomes afflicted with a curse that grants him super-human power in battle but will eventually take his life. Traveling west to find a cure or meet his destiny, he journeys deep into sacred depths of the Great Forest where he meets San (Princess Mononoke), a girl raised by wolf-gods who is waging battle against the human outpost of Iron Town, on the edge of the forest. The girl Mononoke is a force of nature – with blood smeared lips, riding bareback on a great white wolf, doing battle with both gods and humans, she is as iconic a figure as any from film, literature, or opera.
