Though Battlefield 1 only came out a few weeks ago, EA has just announced that they won’t be making a sequel anytime soon, breaking the yearly release cycle of the first-person shooter franchise. Instead, EA will put its focus towards the next Star Wars: Battlefront game, expected to be released sometime in Fall 2017. The next Battlefield game will then be “a couple of years away.”
This news comes from EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen speaking at an investor meeting. Videogamer reported that he explained the reasoning as to really focus on giving Star Wars the gaming experience they felt the latest Battlefront did not have.
“We were very excited about how Star Wars: Battlefront came out last year,” he said. “It’s a beautiful game, people loved it. I think if there was criticism they just wanted more. And so we’re taking that criticism to heart as we build the next game and trying to address any of the issues that they had.”
It is true that a big criticism of the game was the lack of a single player campaign and even playing single or two player is rather limiting due to lack of content. That was a stark contrast to Star Wars: Battlefront II on the original X-Box, which not only had a single player campaign but a multiplayer game to conquer the galaxy against your friends.
Another criticism was the fact Battlefront only focused on battles from the Original Trilogy. It didn’t pull anything from the Prequel Trilogy or Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It does feature the planet Jakku, but it is depicted as the final battle between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire rather than the Resistance and The First Order.
Jorgensen touched on this as well, stating “The other thing is, we were really working with the old canvas of Star Wars, the old trilogy, we weren’t using any of the new materials that came out of Episode VII because our game actually came out slightly before the movie. Next year we’ll have the opportunity to leverage more of that content from the new movies and we think that’ll make the opportunity much larger.”
He also talked about the need from fans for more Star Wars content in the wake of the franchise’s resurgence. “There seems to be no waning in the excitement around the Star Wars world. We’ve got another movie coming up obviously in a few weeks and people are very excited about it, and so we’re looking forward to bringing to the table next year a much bigger, much more exciting Battlefront for consumers.”
Battlefront at least has DLC for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story set for release on December 6th and hopefully the second instalment will include content from both The Force Awakens and Episode VIII.
